wrist pain causes and treatment: What is the best treatment for wrist pain and numbness? Can acupuncture treat carpal tunnel syndrome?
Published Updated
Wrist pain is not one diagnosis. A fall onto an outstretched hand, long sessions of gripping or scrolling, irritation around a tendon, and pressure on a nerve can all feel like “wrist pain” but call for different decisions. The best treatment for wrist pain and numbness starts with recognising the pattern and ruling out problems that need prompt care. For non-urgent symptoms, a neutral wrist splint, temporary activity changes and a clear symptom record are practical starting points. Acupuncture can be discussed as an adjunct after assessment, but it is not a proven stand-alone cure for carpal tunnel syndrome.

The short answer
The best treatment for wrist pain and numbness depends on the cause. After injury, severe pain, deformity, inability to hold things, or loss of feeling need prompt medical assessment. For milder recurring symptoms, reduce aggravating load, consider a properly fitted night splint, and arrange assessment if numbness persists or function changes. Acupuncture may be an optional adjunct for carpal tunnel symptoms, but Cochrane finds the evidence too uncertain to present it as a guaranteed treatment or replacement for usual care.

Your questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
What is the best treatment for wrist pain and numbness?
There is no single best treatment without knowing the cause. Severe injury symptoms, changed shape, inability to hold things or loss of feeling need prompt medical assessment. For milder recurring symptoms, reducing the provoking activity, a correctly fitted night splint where appropriate and a clinical assessment are practical starting points. Treatment can then match the likely problem.
Can acupuncture treat carpal tunnel syndrome?
Acupuncture may be discussed as an adjunct after assessment, but it should not be presented as a stand-alone cure. Cochrane concludes that current evidence is low or very low certainty and cannot establish whether acupuncture is more or less effective than other approaches. Continue medical review and other recommended care.
Which symptoms make carpal tunnel syndrome more likely?
Pain or ache in the fingers, hand or arm, tingling, numbness, a weak thumb and trouble gripping can occur with carpal tunnel syndrome. Symptoms often begin gradually and may be worse at night. These signs overlap with other problems, so they are a reason for assessment rather than confirmation by themselves.
Should I wear a wrist splint at night?
A night splint can keep the wrist straight and may relieve pressure on the nerve in carpal tunnel-type symptoms. It should fit comfortably and not create new numbness, coldness or colour change. If symptoms are severe, progressing or follow an injury, seek assessment instead of relying on a splint alone.
