can you have facial acupuncture with active acne; Can I have facial acupuncture if I have active acne?; Can facial acupuncture be done on another part of the face if I have acne?: What to Know Before Facial Acupuncture
Published Updated
Active acne changes the conversation about facial acupuncture. If a spot is red, hot, swollen, painful, filled with pus, broken, or looks infected, facial acupuncture should not be performed directly through that lesion. The first priority is to have the active inflammation assessed and brought under control. If acne is confined to one area, another area of the face is not automatically suitable either: its skin must be fully intact and free of inflammation, and a Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner needs to assess the whole picture in person. This is a safety-first decision, not a way to push through a cosmetic appointment while the skin is distressed. For a focused overview, see Can facial acupuncture be done on inflamed acne?.

The short answer
Do not have facial acupuncture directly over active acne that is inflamed, pustular, cystic, open, or possibly infected. Arrange medical assessment first, particularly for deep or painful breakouts. A completely clear facial area may sometimes be considered only after an in-person TCM assessment of the skin, current symptoms, and infection risk. Facial acupuncture is not a substitute for acne diagnosis or prescribed dermatology treatment.

Your questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
Can I have facial acupuncture if I have active acne?
Do not have facial acupuncture directly over acne that is red, swollen, painful, pustular, cystic, broken, or possibly infected. Arrange medical assessment for active inflammation first. Once the skin is calm, a practitioner can assess whether any elective facial treatment is appropriate.
Can facial acupuncture be done on another part of the face if I have acne?
It may be considered only when the proposed area is completely clear, intact, and free from inflammation, and after an in-person assessment. A clear area elsewhere does not automatically make treatment suitable while another part of the face has an active flare.
How can I tell an acne mark from active acne?
An active lesion is usually raised, tender, red, warm, swollen, or contains pus. A residual mark is usually flat after the spot has settled and may look red, brown, or darker than the surrounding skin. A clinician can help distinguish marks, scars, and ongoing inflammation.
I am using acne medication. Should I stop it before asking about facial acupuncture?
No. Keep using prescribed treatment as directed unless the prescriber changes it. Tell the practitioner about every topical and oral medicine, including any dryness, peeling, or irritation, so they can decide whether facial treatment should be deferred.
