What Causes Wrist Pain, What Are the Symptoms of Wrist Pain, and Is Wrist Pain Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Published Updated
Wrist pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It may start after a fall, appear after a long stretch of lifting, typing or tool use, or develop gradually with stiffness, a lump, tingling or weaker grip. The most useful clues are where it hurts, what happened before it began, which movements bring it on, and whether feeling or hand control has changed. Carpal tunnel syndrome is one possible explanation for wrist and hand symptoms, especially night-time tingling, but it is not the automatic answer whenever a hand feels numb. This guide helps you describe the pattern clearly, recognise when a prompt medical assessment is more important than home care, and prepare questions for an appropriate consultation.
Appointments are confirmed through WhatsApp. If you have language requirements, please mention them in your enquiry.

The short answer
Wrist pain can result from a recent sprain or fracture, repeated loading, tendon or joint problems, a ganglion cyst, or nerve pressure. Pain on the thumb side versus little-finger side, swelling, timing after injury, and numbness or grip change all help narrow the possibilities. Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause pain, tingling, numbness and weakness, often noticed at night, but an examination is needed to distinguish it from other wrist or nerve problems.

Frequently asked questions
What causes wrist pain most often?
Common possibilities include injury after a fall or twist, repeated strain, tendinitis, arthritis, a ganglion cyst, and nerve problems. The timing, exact location, swelling, sensation changes and function are more useful than assuming a single cause from the word “pain.” [3]
What are the symptoms of wrist pain that may suggest carpal tunnel syndrome?
Pain, tingling, numbness and weakness in the wrist or hand—particularly a gradual pattern that is noticed at night or affects holding objects—can be consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome. They are not proof of it. A clinician uses examination and, when needed, further tests to distinguish other causes. [2] [4]
Is wrist pain carpal tunnel syndrome every time the hand feels numb?
When should I seek urgent help for wrist pain?
