Can I stretch my shoulder if it hurts? Is acupuncture suitable for my shoulder pain? Does acupuncture work for shoulder pain?
Published Updated
If your shoulder hurts, the useful question is not simply whether stretching is good or bad. It is whether a particular movement feels controlled, stays within a comfortable range and leaves symptoms no worse afterwards. Gentle use is often preferable to keeping the shoulder completely still, while a hard end-range stretch, a sudden pull or a heavy gym session can be the wrong next step when the cause is unclear. Acupuncture can be discussed as one part of care after assessment, but it is not a way to identify or repair every shoulder problem. The first priority is to notice how the pain started, what the arm can and cannot do, and whether there are signs that need medical or physiotherapy review.
Appointments are confirmed through WhatsApp. If you have language requirements, please mention them in your enquiry.

The short answer
You may try gentle shoulder movement if it stays comfortable and does not clearly worsen pain during or afterwards; do not force a stretch, invent strenuous exercises or use heavy equipment. Sudden severe pain, deformity, major swelling, persistent numbness, fever, injury-related pain or inability to move the arm needs prompt medical assessment. Acupuncture may be considered as an adjunct after assessment, but the evidence for shoulder pain is limited and does not guarantee relief or recovery.

Frequently asked questions
Can I stretch my shoulder if it hurts?
Try only gentle movement in a comfortable range. Stop a movement that creates sharp, catching or clearly escalating pain, or leaves the shoulder notably worse later. Avoid forceful end-range stretching, self-designed strenuous exercise and heavy equipment until the movement limit and cause have been assessed.
Is acupuncture suitable for my shoulder pain?
It may be discussed as an adjunct after suitable assessment, not as a substitute for urgent, medical or physiotherapy evaluation. Tell the practitioner about the onset of pain, injuries, medicines, bleeding or clotting issues, possible pregnancy, relevant health conditions and any change in symptoms.
Does acupuncture work for shoulder pain?
Cochrane found insufficient evidence to establish whether acupuncture works for shoulder pain or is harmful, although limited studies suggested possible short-term changes in pain or function. It should therefore not be presented as a guaranteed treatment, cure or repair for a structural injury.
When should shoulder pain be checked urgently?
Get urgent medical advice for sudden or very severe pain, inability to move the arm, deformity, severe swelling, ongoing tingling or numbness, loss of sensation, a hot or cold arm, fever or feeling unwell, or pain that began after an accident. Seek emergency care for chest symptoms or breathing difficulty.
