Can acupuncture repair a rotator cuff tear? What happens during acupuncture for shoulder pain? What does an acupuncturist ask about shoulder pain?
Published Updated
A painful shoulder can make reaching a shelf, fastening a seat belt, carrying a laptop bag, or sleeping on one side unexpectedly difficult. The first question is often, can acupuncture repair a rotator cuff tear? No: acupuncture cannot knit a torn tendon back together, repair a fracture, or put a dislocated joint back in place. It may be discussed as one part of symptom management only after the pattern and any suspected injury have been assessed. What happens during acupuncture for shoulder pain is not simply a set of needles: a practitioner should first ask how the pain began, observe movement that is comfortable enough to test, and decide whether medical or imaging assessment should come first. Knowing what an acupuncturist asks about shoulder pain helps you arrive with the details that make that decision safer and more useful.

The short answer
Acupuncture cannot repair a rotator cuff tear or other damaged shoulder tissue. For shoulder pain, an appropriate consultation starts with the onset, injury history, pain pattern, movement limits, and symptoms such as weakness or numbness. If treatment is suitable, point selection and needle time are individual rather than a fixed recipe. Sudden severe pain, deformity, major swelling, loss of movement, or persistent altered sensation needs prompt medical assessment first.

Your questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
Can acupuncture repair a torn rotator cuff?
No. Acupuncture cannot reconnect or rebuild a torn rotator cuff tendon. A suspected tear needs appropriate medical assessment. If acupuncture is considered later, it should be described as a possible component of symptom management, not as structural repair.
What happens during acupuncture for shoulder pain?
A suitable visit begins with a history of the pain, injury and function, and may include gentle observation of comfortable movement. If treatment is appropriate, the practitioner explains the approach, obtains consent, selects points individually, and discusses sensations and aftercare. There is no one fixed protocol for every shoulder complaint.
What does an acupuncturist ask about shoulder pain?
Expect questions about onset, triggers, rest and night pain, movement limits, work or sport demands, prior injury, neck or arm symptoms, weakness or numbness, current treatment, medicines, pregnancy possibility, implanted devices, and relevant medical history. Be specific about any recent trauma or sudden change.
Should I get checked before acupuncture if I cannot lift my arm?
Yes. Very difficult movement or inability to move the arm should be medically assessed, especially after an injury. Urgent help is also appropriate for sudden severe pain, deformity, major swelling, persistent altered sensation, a hot or cold arm, or feeling feverish and unwell.
