When to see a doctor for elbow pain: should I go to A&E for elbow pain after a fall? — urgent care for elbow pain
Published Updated
Elbow pain often settles, but the question is not simply how much it hurts: it is whether the pattern could signal an emergency, a significant injury, infection or a nerve problem. Sudden arm or elbow pain with pressure, heaviness or squeezing across the chest is an emergency—call 999 now. After a fall, a changed shape, a snapping sound, severe pain, difficulty moving, or numbness needs urgent assessment. Without those warning signs, briefly reduce painful loading, watch the direction of change, and arrange an outpatient review if pain persists, worsens or limits ordinary life.
Appointments are confirmed through WhatsApp. If you have language requirements, please mention them in your enquiry.

The short answer
Call 999 if sudden arm or elbow pain occurs with chest pressure, heaviness or squeezing. Go for urgent assessment after a fall if the elbow looks misshapen, you heard a snap, pain is severe, movement is very difficult, or the arm tingles or feels numb. A hot, red, swollen elbow with fever or feeling unwell needs same-day care. Mild pain with preserved movement can be monitored briefly, but book an assessment if it is worsening, persistent or affecting work, sleep or daily tasks.

Your questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
Should chest pressure with elbow or arm pain wait for a clinic appointment?
No. Sudden arm pain with pressure, heaviness or squeezing across the chest is an emergency. Call 999 immediately; do not wait for a routine clinic, WhatsApp reply or general pain-treatment appointment [1].
What should I do if my elbow hurts after a fall but there is no obvious cut?
A lack of a cut does not rule out a significant injury. Seek urgent assessment if you heard a snap, the arm looks changed in shape, pain is severe, movement is difficult, or you have tingling or numbness. Avoid forceful stretching, massage and trying to put it back yourself [1].
Can I wait if tingling in my fingers comes and goes?
Is a hot, swollen elbow safe to treat with ice at home?
