Hip Pain Location and Hip Pain Hong Kong: A Practical Hip Pain Assessment Guide
Published Updated
Where hip pain is felt is a useful starting point, not a diagnosis. Groin discomfort, pain over the outside of the hip, a deep buttock ache, or symptoms running into the thigh can each point the assessment in a different direction. The useful question is not only “where does it hurt?” but also “what happens when I walk, climb stairs, get out of a chair, lie on that side, or put weight through the leg?” For hip pain Hong Kong enquiries, such notes focus the first consultation. Severe pain after a fall, inability to walk or bear weight, or altered sensation after an injury needs urgent medical assessment rather than an online assessment. [1]
Appointments are confirmed through WhatsApp. If you have language requirements, please mention them in your enquiry.

The short answer
Hip pain location can offer clues, but it cannot confirm the cause on its own. Groin or front-thigh pain, outer-hip pain when lying on that side, and buttock pain that travels down the leg can each call for different questions and examinations. A hip pain assessment should combine location with onset, injury, walking, stairs, stiffness, sleep and nerve-like symptoms. Seek urgent care after significant injury, if you cannot bear weight, or if numbness follows an injury. [1]

Your questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
Does groin pain mean I have hip arthritis?
Why does my outer hip hurt when I sleep on that side?
Side-lying can compress sensitive structures around the outer hip, and this pattern can occur with several causes. It is useful to report, especially if it also affects walking or stairs, but it cannot establish bursitis or another condition without assessment. [1]
Can hip pain travel down the leg?
Yes. Hip-region pain may be felt into the thigh, while some pain that seems to be in the hip or buttock can come from the lower spine and travel down the leg. Burning, tingling, numbness or weakness should be described clearly. [3]
What should I bring to a hip pain assessment?
Bring a brief timeline, a list of medicines and treatments, relevant reports or imaging if available, and notes on walking, stairs, rising, sleep, side-lying and weight-bearing. Tell the clinician about any fall, fever, warmth, swelling, numbness or weakness.
