Muscle Strain Symptoms, Muscle Strain Signs and Muscle Tear Symptoms
Published Updated
Muscle strain symptoms usually begin as pain or tenderness in one area after a sudden pull, a hard effort or repeated use. You may notice swelling, bruising, cramping, weakness or less comfortable movement. Muscle strain signs can overlap with injuries to a tendon, ligament, joint or bone, so a painful spot alone cannot tell you exactly what has been damaged. Muscle tear symptoms such as a pop, a visible dent, major swelling, numbness or an inability to use the limb deserve prompt medical assessment.
Appointments are confirmed through WhatsApp. If you have language requirements, please mention them in your enquiry.

The short answer
Muscle strain symptoms can include local pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising, spasms, weakness and reduced range of movement. A strain may develop suddenly during a sprint, lift or awkward turn, or gradually with repetitive loading. Muscle tear symptoms can be more serious: a pop, a gap or dent, marked loss of strength, severe bruising, numbness or difficulty using the area should be assessed promptly, because other injuries can feel similar.

Your questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common muscle strain symptoms?
Pain or tenderness in one spot, swelling, bruising or skin-colour change, spasm, weakness and restricted movement are common. The symptoms may be immediate after a sudden event or build gradually with repeated loading.
How do I know whether it is a pulled muscle or something else?
You cannot reliably tell from symptoms alone. A clinician uses the injury story, examination of tenderness, strength and movement, and sometimes imaging to distinguish a strain from tendon, ligament, bone, joint or nerve problems.
Should I keep stretching a strained muscle?
Do not force a painful stretch or repeatedly test the injury in the early stage. Stop the activity that provokes symptoms and get individual advice on when and how to reintroduce movement.
When should I seek medical help for muscle tear symptoms?
Seek prompt assessment for a pop with loss of function, a visible dent or deformity, severe or rapidly increasing swelling or bruising, inability to bear weight, numbness, tingling, colour change or a cold limb. Also seek care if symptoms worsen or do not improve.
