Shoulder Tendonitis or Bursitis: Shoulder pain with weakness or numbness when to seek help
Published Updated
A painful shoulder after lifting, exercise or a long day at a desk can make people wonder whether it is shoulder tendonitis or bursitis. Those labels are possible explanations, but they do not account for every painful, weak or numb arm. The useful question is not which label fits best online; it is what changed, what movements are limited, and whether the pattern needs prompt assessment. This guide helps you record a shoulder problem clearly, recognise situations that should not be managed as routine soreness, and prepare for an informed medical or traditional Chinese medicine consultation in Hong Kong.
Appointments are confirmed through WhatsApp. If you have language requirements, please mention them in your enquiry.

The short answer
Shoulder tendonitis or bursitis may cause pain that is worse with arm use, but symptoms alone cannot distinguish them from a strain, instability, frozen shoulder, a tendon tear or a problem outside the shoulder. Shoulder pain with weakness or numbness when to seek help becomes more urgent with sudden severe pain, an arm that cannot move, visible change or marked swelling, persistent pins and needles or loss of feeling, fever, or pain after an injury. Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if shoulder pain is tendonitis or bursitis?
When should shoulder weakness or numbness be assessed?
Get urgent help for sudden severe pain, inability to move the arm, a changed shape or major swelling, persistent pins and needles, loss of feeling, an arm that is hot or cold to touch, fever, feeling unwell, or symptoms after an injury. Seek a non-urgent assessment for worsening pain, persistent symptoms or marked difficulty moving the arm. [1]
Should I rest my shoulder completely if it hurts?
Avoid actions that clearly worsen symptoms, heavy gym work and self-designed strenuous exercises. For a non-urgent problem, gentle movement and staying reasonably active are generally advised instead of completely stopping shoulder use. Stop and seek advice if movement causes sharp worsening, spreading numbness or weakness. [1]
What should I bring to a shoulder consultation?
Bring a timeline of onset, the activity or injury involved, pain location and quality, aggravating and easing movements, sleep impact, numbness or weakness, changes in daily tasks, prior shoulder problems, test results if available, and current medicines or treatments.
