Shoulder Pain Stretches and Gentle Shoulder Stretches: What Stretches Are Safe for Shoulder Pain?
Published Updated
A sore shoulder is not a signal to stretch harder. The safer starting point is to notice how the pain began, what movement feels limited, and whether there is any sign that needs prompt assessment. For a new problem without an injury or warning symptoms, a supported arm swing can be a gentle way to explore comfortable movement. Keep it slow and small, rather than pushing through a sharp catch. Stop if it brings on new pain, builds symptoms during the day, or leaves the shoulder worse the following morning.

The short answer
What stretches are safe for shoulder pain? There is no single stretch that suits every painful shoulder. If there was no injury and no urgent symptom, start with a supported forward-and-back arm swing: support yourself on a stable table or chair, lean slightly forward, let the affected arm hang without a weight, and make a small relaxed swing. Do not force the arm through pain. Stop for new or worsening pain and seek assessment when movement is very difficult or symptoms are not improving.

Your questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
Can shoulder stretches relieve every type of shoulder pain?
No. Shoulder pain can have different patterns and causes, and a movement that feels tolerable for one person may aggravate another problem. Start with symptoms, injury history and functional limits rather than copying a generic stretch. If pain is worsening, movement is very difficult, or it has not started to improve after two weeks, arrange a medical assessment. [2]
How do I begin a supported arm swing?
Stand beside a stable table or chair. Support yourself with the more comfortable hand, lean slightly forward, let the other arm hang naturally without a weight, and make a slow, small forward-and-back swing. NHS inform describes gradually increasing the swing only as it is tolerated. Stop if you feel new pain, become unsteady or feel unwell. [1]
Should I stretch through a sharp catch in my shoulder?
No. Do not force a sharp catch, sudden pain or an unfamiliar pain response. Make the movement smaller or stop. A safe self-care trial should not leave the existing shoulder pain worse overall or worse the next morning. If the catch persists or the arm is becoming harder to use, seek an assessment. [1]
When should I seek help instead of stretching?
Seek urgent medical help for sudden or very severe pain, an inability to move the arm, a changed shape or major swelling, persisting pins and needles or loss of feeling, symptoms after an injury, or fever or feeling unwell. For non-urgent concerns, arrange assessment if pain worsens, movement is very difficult, or it has not started improving after two weeks. [2]
